No matter what path in life we choose to walk down, there seems to be an easy to follow plan.

Take the President for instance. The traditional path would dictate someone become a county leader and work their way up the ladder into state politics and then the senate. This all seems basic and normal, but our most successful presidents never went down this traditional path.

When you look at some of the most successful presidents they come from various backgrounds and almost all of them became president at a younger age than other people who take the traditional route.

Why do I tell you this? Because the traditional route is bulls**t.

We naturally think vertically. What’s the difference between successful tech companies and failures? In short, they think differently than the rest of us. Instead of thinking vertically, they think laterally.

So how do you think laterally and what does that actually mean?

Lateral thinking is a way to solve problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic.

Quite a mouth-full right?

Some of the most important and successful people of our generation are using lateral thinking to accomplish unique and amazing things.

“You cannot dig a hole in a different place by digging the same hole deeper”

Lateral thinking is not something reserved for those of the highest IQ, but can be learned by anyone. Imagine the following problem:

You pull up to a stop sign on a very stormy night. On the sidewalk stands your best friend who has bailed you out more times than you can count, an old and frail lady and the women of your dreams. You can only fit one person from the storm in your car as it only has two seats. Who do you save?

Was it the old lady, your best friend or the love of your life?

If you chose just one, you didn’t use lateral thinking. The answer using lateral thinking?

You give your best friend the keys and let him drive the old lady home while you wait and spend time with the love of your life waiting for the bus.

 Quite different huh?

We need to begin understanding how to develop a lateral thinking mindset and apply it in all walks of life. In doing so, we are able to accomplish so much more in an amazingly creative way.
