Our minimalist future

Our minimalist future

The future will be minimalist.

Not from a philosophical perspective, although that could be.

Through technology, we'll see minimalism become an easier way of living.

Here’s how I’m thinking about it.

Less physical devices

Technology has the unique ability to combine multiple functions into a single device — look at the iPhone for an example.

What happens when you need fewer devices to accomplish the same amount of functions?

An example is Augmented Reality glasses replacing your computer monitors and TV screen. You get the same functionality—more when you think about it—with fewer physical devices.

This creates a digital layer to reality, which creates space in our organic lives.

The physical => digital.

Less clothing

While 3D printing has a long way to go, there is a clear path to printing clothing at a fraction of the cost. Assuming we can recycle clothing after some time, if not after each use, we may not need a dresser or closet.

Consider how much weight the average flyer packs for a trip. The majority of that weight comes from clothing. What if you could "print" your clothes at your destination?

No more checked bags.

___ as a service

With autonomous transportation becoming more feasible, it’s not hard to imagine car ownership fading away as well. Given enough time, we may find other areas of our lives being abstracted away or “offloaded” into a service we pay for only when used. It’s the optimization of value.
